Illya Kowalchuk, M. Ed. hails from the suburban wilds of Long Island, where he avoided schoolwork by playing outside, reading comics, and mastering video games. Buckling down for college, Illya earned a BA in History and a K-6 Teaching Certification from CU Boulder and a M. Ed. with a focus on Integrating the Creative Arts Into the Curriculum via Lesley University. His teaching career was spent at Horizons K-8 School, a William Glasser Quality School.
In addition to bringing comics, games, graffiti, and swing dancing into his classroom, Illya was co-awarded a fellowship from the Council for Basic Education to develop Horizons Middle School’s Rise and Fall of Ancient Civilizations history curriculum. Utilizing his extensive experience with pop culture as an educational and relational development tool, Illya co-founded Pop Culture Classroom and Denver Comic Con. Currently, Illya designs and oversees educational programming in schools, events, and correctional institutions.
